Jennifer L. Jennings brings us a fast chase set in Hawaii in An Island of Illusions. The title evoked images of something fantastic but this is a good old story about a group of detectives following a cold trail trying to locate a small abducted child.
Sarah Woods’ marriage is on the rocks but she’s hoping to find some redemption during her week long Hawaii vacation. Turns out she’s been manipulated into it by her head detective boss who she’s working with on the sly. A celebrated doctor’s grandchild was kidnapped by the boy’s father and was never returned. His spoilt daughter is inconsolable. The trail is picked up by fluke and a command center is set up. The girl’s husband is living alone in luxury but there is no sign of the child. The team digs for information using top notch surveillance and infiltration techniques. But chances are, the child is already dead!
This was a super fast read on a weekend morning and I literally breezed through in a couple of hours. It’s a great beach or poolside read. Sarah’s life runs parallel with the main story. There are a limited number of suspects but the book holds your interest till the end. I totally recommend An Island of Illusions for your summer reading list.
