The Man in Lower Ten by Mary Roberts Rinehart is a great work by America’s queen of mystery. This is a public domain book and I am glad that I have belatedly discovered this marvelous author and her work. Mystery fans are in for a treat with this story is set in an earlier era.
Our protagonist is a lawyer in Washington and leaves for Pittsburgh to collect some important papers from a witness. On his way back, there is a mix-up and he ends up sleeping in a different berth on the train. The morning reveals that the man in his berth has been murdered. Thus begins a mystery that only gets deeper as you read on. A pretty maiden comes into the picture but she turns out to be the woman his partner is in love with. Lolly must not only clear his name, but also find the missing evidence, struggle with romantic feelings, and ward off attempts on his life.
If you are a mystery lover like me, you have exhausted Agatha Christie, Hitchcock, M. C. Beaton and other usual suspects, and are on the lookout for some more intrigue from a good author. You cannot go wrong with Ms. Rinehart. This is a fast and witty narrative, and I have other works by the author on my ‘to read’ list. With free downloads from Amazon, there is simply no reason you should pass up such a great work.
