Lauren Worthing is a harried mom of two who teaches middle school. She is stuck in her job but endures because hubby is struggling with his startup. A summons for jury duty turns Lauren’s life upside down and ‘Lauren Takes Leave’. Lauren presumably flips a switch and does crazy uncharacteristic things. Lauren’s story is one many suburban working moms might identify with, I think.
As the story progresses, we find Lauren has a thing for designer bags ( read Prada and Hermes). She went to Harvard graduate school and idolizes her grad school professor even after two decades. Lauren has a border line phone/ email fling going on with a friend from high school. Throw in an illegal housekeeper who has her own mind. And birthday parties with people selling adult toys. And things just get crazier and crazier.
This is a first book and a great first attempt and the author’s biography sounds very similar to the story. There are some funny moments and some surprising ones. Like when you wonder if your typical K12 teacher really shops at Neiman Marcus or has a full time maid. But hey, if you are a super mom, you will really identify with the lead character and understand why she needs to abscond from her life.
