The Clifton Chronicles continue with Book Number 4, and Be Careful What You Wish For turns out to be more action packed than books three and four. I wrote a review of Only Time Will Tell earlier, and somehow missed reviewing The Sins of the Father and Best Kept Secret.
If you have never read any book in the Clifton Chronicles, this review may contain some spoilers for you. That is because the story has progressed to future generations and you will read about names and events that have not happened yet in the first book. For Jeffrey Archer fans, the book is like coming home. I did mention the whole familiar territory concept in my earlier review of the Clifton saga, and I will say it again. In a way, similar things are happening in a different setting to different characters.
Emma Clifton is fighting hard to keep Barrington Shipping profitable. One of her biggest challenges is to convince the board not to go in for building a luxury liner. Sebastian narrowly escapes an attempt on his life (cliffhanger), but his life will not be worth living. A new vendetta starts against the Clifton and Barrington families, and old characters like Alex Fisher and Lady Virginia, the vipers, are roped in to do more harm. Giles is busy keeping his marginal seat intact. Jessica is growing up to be a very talented artist. Seb meets a man who will influence him to take a drastic decision about his future, and indeed, may change the course of his life.
Be Careful What You Wish For is old wine in a new bottle. New enemies, old enemies, staunch allies, new sympathizers, all move around like pieces on a chess board, involved in an intricate dance with the Clifton-Barrington clan in the center. Surprisingly enough, there is no mention at all of Harry’s past or parentage in this one, so maybe that topic has been put to rest. But I still can’t help feeling that there will be a big ‘reveal’ that will shock us and leave us speechless, true Jeffrey Archer style.
After reading Be Careful What You Wish For, I eagerly await the final installment in the series. The timeline is one that the author is most familiar with. And a whole new generation of readers can get a taste of the genius of his writing. Needless to say, a must read! And yes, this one ends in the ultimate cliffhanger too.
