To be interested in reading Georgiana Darcy’s Diary, you need to first know who she is. So you will definitely need to read Jane Austen’s most famous work, Pride and Prejudice first. Not too difficult a task for Kindle lovers, since this book is always a free download. Jane Austen fans will no doubt have read it many times over and have already met the shy teenager Georgiana who is previously believed to be as proud as her brother Fitzwilliam Darcy.
The story is literally in the form of a diary kept by Georgiana, and contains her innermost thoughts. These are mostly an account of what is happening around her, and how she reacts to it. The setting is Pemberly, the Darcy estate and Elizabeth Bennet, now Elizabeth Darcy and her husband are very much in residence. We see Georgiana is not the difficult girl she was first portrayed to be, but just a shy person who has never had much opportunity to interact with people outside her close family circle.
There is a house party at Pemberly made up of the Darcys’s formidable aunt, Lady Catherine. Her daughter Rose is also present and her usual sickly arrogant self. Another disgruntled guest is Caroline Bingley who still has not found a husband. There are a few boring gentlemen invited just for the purpose of matchmaking. But to Lady Catherine’s disgust, none of the girls seem to be taking a shine to any of the men.
We see that Georgiana is slightly ashamed of some of her past actions and has misgivings. She has secretly been in love with her cousin who is away at war. Then there is news of his engagement and Edward himself turns up. Will Georgiana summon the courage to confront him about his engagement?
Meanwhile, the blackguard Wickham makes an experience. There is a French aristocrat wooing the ladies, and Elizabeth is sick. Will there be any happy events at Pemberly?
Georgiana Darcy’s diary is written for a very specific audience – Austen fans who will lap up anything to do with her characters. Actually, the audience is narrower than that – Pride and Prejudice fans who are enamored with the name Darcy.
