If you have never read an Agatha Raisin mystery before, you’re in for a treat with Agatha Raisin and the Deadly Dance. M. C. Beaton gives us a delightful portrayal of a bumbling middle aged woman living in the Cotswolds who tries her hand at detecting. Agatha Raisin is a cunning, chain smoking widow who lives with her cats and refuses to accept that the twinge in her hip is a sign of arthritis.
Agatha Raisin is bored of early retirement. She finally decides to open her own detective agency and is railroaded into hiring her new 67 year old neighbor as a secretary. Agatha is asked to cover the birthday party of a wealthy girl who has received death threats and her intuition saves the girl’s life. Only to endanger Agatha’s! Agatha goes around asking questions with her comrades in arms, the stingy Sir Charles Fraith and the young Roy Silver. Agatha somehow escapes the attempts on her life and her investigation takes her to Paris. Will Agatha Raisin’s intuition save the day again?
I wonder if every 50+ woman uses as much makeup as Agatha Raisin. The Cotswolds provide a charming setting as always. Mrs. Bloxby is reassuring as the vicar’s wife and Agatha’s staunch supporter. I love M C Beaton’s books and am on my way to completing this whole series. Verdict – grab the whole set and take a deep dive!
