Deadly Ambition by Laura Bradford is a Jenkins and Burns mystery. This is a short novella rather than a full blown mystery book. Jersey Shore fans will like reading about this small seaside town and its inhabitants, a gutsy lot bent on rebuilding the town after a destructive hurricane. Elise Burns solves the mystery easily enough with just a little help from Detective Burns.
The Ocean Point community is just recovering from a debilitating hurricane. Most business owners have chosen to stay and rebuild rather than seek safer sanctuary somewhere inland. When a string of robberies hits the struggling stores, Elise Burns is enraged enough to get on the trail of these thieves.
Elise Burns works at the local paper and is married to Detective Burns. Elise is temporarily at the helm at her paper, and is finding the added responsibility daunting. Things turn worse when a string of robberies intensifies to the murder of the much loved owner of the local inn. What’s more, the accused is Elise’s intern. Granted, he has earned no brownie points from anyone with his obnoxious behavior, but Elise believes in his innocence. In a town bent on pinning a culprit soon, Elise might be the only ally the hapless intern will get.
Hot on the trail, Elise latches on to some feature stories in her own paper. Turns out, every owner who was part of a story published by her paper has been robbed. So what is the connection, and why did the last robbery turn into a murder? Will Elise be able to exonerate her protégé?
Deadly Ambition is a fast read and perfect to read on the go, like on a train ride or while traveling. It is light and easy, has a beach town as a backdrop, and ends as expected. And it’s a great introduction to the Jenkins and Burns series by Laura Bradford.
