I was a bit reluctant to read Louisiana Longshot. I have read some cozy mysteries and liked them. Some, I wasn’t too keen on. But somehow, I had high expectations from this book and was afraid of being let down.
Fortune is a top CIA operative who works in the Middle East and other sensitive areas. Now she has a hit on her and is forced to go underground. Her boss arranges for her to go to a small Louisiana town called Sinful, posing as his niece. The niece, hence Fortune, is supposed to be a former beauty queen, as unlike her self as possible. Fortune reluctantly loads up her disgusting pink luggage on the bus and sets off.
Her recently departed aunt has a sprawling house and she is greeted by another senior woman. The house comes with a geriatric dog called Bones. A bayou runs behind the house and on day one, Bones find a – guess what – bone in the muddy water. Only problem is, the bone is human! Most people in Sinful have a fair idea of who it belonged to, Harvey, the local millionaire scumbag who disappeared several years ago. the suspicion falls on his wife who goes missing.
Fortune learns about the Sinful Ladies’ Society who as good as run the town of Sinful. Gertie and Ida Belle are formidable founding members who have sworn to protect Marie, Harvey’s wife. The two senior ladies embark on some madcap schemes to find Marie, with Fortune in tow. Fortune is trying very hard to conceal her training and act like the beauty queen she is. There is a local handsome Deputy who is an ex-Marine. He is on to Gertie and Ida Belle and repeatedly warns Fortune to stay away from them. The ladies succeed in being one step ahead of him at the cost of their lives.
I am happy to report that this book is a winner. I loved it! The characters, though quirky, are strong. The local scene in a small bayou town is entertaining. Above all, this book is about friendship and loyalty and how a group of women stay staunch in their beliefs and are ready to undergo any sacrifice just to protect their friends. How rare is that in the world we live in?
I look forward to meeting Gertie and Ida Belle and Fortune again for some more banana pudding in the Louisiana town of Sinful.
