Cleopatra Jones will lift you up like a twister and carry you along in her whirlwind life in On the Nickel. Maggie Toussaint’s heroine can have her own admiration society. Kids, BFFs, ex husbands, forgetful moms – she takes them all in stride while living it up in a small Eastern town. This is the first entertaining book I have read in 2014.
Cleo is an accountant who dresses shabbily most of the time. Her teenage daughters are a handful. And so is her recently widowed mother. Cleo herself is recently divorced and the family is still reeling from all these losses. Add in a heavily pregnant dog, and you have emotions running wild. Cleo’s BFF is leading a boring existence with her steady boyfriend. Cleo herself is shaking it up with the hot golf pro who is much, much younger than her. Sound interesting yet?
Cleopatra’s mother has a very public argument with her arch nemesis, the doyenne of their small town. The woman is found dead the next day. Mama is top suspect and faces arrest and conviction for murder. Cleo and friend set off hot on the trail of the murderer. Juggling her ex who is trying to get back with her, and her hot boyfriend who can’t get enough of her, Cleo tries to find evidence that will exonerate her mother. She will have to turn many stones to get on the track of the real killer.
As I said before, On The Nickel provides nonstop action. There is some humor and Cleo’s loyalty for her family is nice to watch. You will never get bored reading this book because so much is happening all the time. There are some romantic plots woven in too.
This book is a good casual read for mystery lovers who like some sub plots and a not too gory mystery.
