That Affair Next Door is an intriguing mystery set against the backdrop of turn of the century New York City. This is a public domain book by the American novelist Anna Katherine Green and my first book from this author. Amelia Butterworth, an elderly society lady and spinster witnesses suspicious events in the house next door and insists on investigating further the next morning. A young woman is found brutally murdered and the house owner’s young son is arrested.
Miss Butterworth is a logical, intelligent woman whose observant nature provides the detective with some clues early on. She is convinced that the wrong man has been arrested and vows to solve the mystery herself. Tagged by her faithful maid, she tries to recreate the events that led to the murder and interviews witnesses in her own manner. The plot is intricate and it takes the combined forces of Miss Butterworth and the elderly detective Mr. Gryce to solve the crime.
That Affair Next Door is written in first person in the voice of Amelia Butterworth. The writing style is a bit different since the book was written over a century ago. Readers will get a glimpse of the New York of the 1890s. The story takes a lot of twists and turns and the mystery is almost solved many times. Reading this book is an enjoyable experience for any mystery lover.
I am glad I have recently discovered two mystery writers – Mary Roberts Rinehart and now Anna Katherine Green. Since most of their books are in the public domain, they are FREE for everyone to enjoy. If you like classic mysteries, this is one book you definitely want to add to your collection.
