I read and reviewed Confession is Murder by Peg Cochran a few months ago. I had mixed feelings and was not quite taken with the character of Lucille. But a few weeks passed and the book kind of sunk in. Maybe I read some books since then might have seemed worse. But for some reason, when I came across another Lucille mystery, I was game for giving it another shot.
The background story continues in this book. Last time we saw that Bernadette, Lucille’s teen daughter, and Tony Jr., her friend Flo’s son, had got up to some funny business. Now Bernadette is pregnant with a huge belly and Tony is off fighting in Afghanistan. A wedding is planned between Bernadette and Taylor Grabowski, and Lucille is all for it. The Grabowskis are loaded and throw the rehearsal dinner at a fancy hotel where Lucille gets into a fight with Donna, the groom’s mother.
On the wedding day, all hell breaks loose when Donna is found dead in the church, murdered with a ribbon tied around her neck. The party goes on in the church hall, but the groom is missing. Lucille and Flo try to track the Grabowskis down, and open a whole can of worms. Richie Sambucco is not cutting Lucille any slack this time.
Frankie’s cousins have moved into Lucille’s house for good and she has even more mouths to feed. And things are not very warm in the bedroom. Lucille goes about in her Olds, listening to her favorite Little Richard, praying to her saints, determined to make an honest woman of her daughter before the baby comes. Flo is trying to snag a doctor, and Tony Jr. might just be coming back. How many meals will it take before Lucille can solve the murder?
Did I mention, Lucille is on a diet that she designs as she goes, always thinking she will ‘not eat’ the next day. I am sure we can all identify with that, and so can Lula!
Unholy Matrimony went down better than the first one. There were Saints galore in the first part of the book and then they panned out for a bit. Gotta love a woman who thinks about what she will make for dinner when she is getting Botoxed or after just delivering a baby. Or maybe not!
