When Lies Crumble comes from the Henery Press. It is sort of a cozy mystery but not quite. And it stars a male detective. Carter Mays is a Chicago based PI who does the most unprofessional thing by falling for his client.
Cindy Bedford is rich! She is totally spoilt and is Daddy’s girl. She is set to have a lavish wedding with no expense spared. And then she is ditched at the altar. It turns out that her fiancé has done much worse. He has also managed to fleece her father of a hefty sum of money.
We learn that Cindy’s father is a crooked businessman. He has been doing some illegal business on the side for years. his wife knows about this. Cindy doesn’t. They have managed to keep their daughter protected and away from it all and succeeded so far. Bedford has his own set of henchmen who are hot on the trail of the culprit.
Cindy puts an axe in it when she hires Carter. Obviously, Bedford is worried about what Carter will find so he tries to eliminate him. And then hire him. Cindy gradually learns the truth about her father. Meanwhile, it seems that her fiancé is very much around and he also manages to snare Bedford in a scandal and get him arrested.
Carter Mays is hot on the trail. He unearths a plot that may have spanned several years. He also finds himself attracted to Cindy. She returns the sentiment and they find it hard to keep the distance.
Will Carter Mays be able to recover the stolen money, exonerate Bedford and also keep Cindy safe? When Lies Crumble is a fast read with not many surprises. Predictable to regular readers, but a good way to pass a couple of hours.
