A Love for All Time by Chloe Douglas sounded very different from my usual picks, but intrigued me nevertheless. Mystery and romance lovers will both be happy with this book that spans centuries. Throw in the infamous Jack the Ripper, and you’ve got the perfect formula for a popular novel.
Mick Giovanni, a NYPD cop is tormented by events that happened two years ago. His best buddy Tommy was shot down, and he thinks he could have prevented it. Now he is divorced and burned out and almost ready to take the law in his hands. Forced into some time off, he hasn’t the faintest notion of what he will be doing. Miss Lettitia Merryweather waltzs into his life fiddles with a fancy device she has and whisks him away to Victorian London. Her sister is missing and Mick is her only hope in solving the mystery.
Mick and Lettie butt heads more than once. Also, Jack the Ripper, that infamous serial killer is still at large. Lettie’s sister was forced into a life of prostitution and Mick visits some of the sordid parts of London looking for her. More characters are introduced – a benevolent uncle, possessive fiancé, tyrant father, meek mother, and a police force that seems to care less about what happened to a fallen woman. Mick and Lettitia are in hot pursuit, but they do find time to pay attention to the sparks that fly between them. Its Back to the Future meets 14 Going on 30.
Beneath all her prudish veneer, Lettitia turns out to be a hot blooded not so young maiden who wonders about what life has to offer her. And she is all for learning it from Mick! Time is running out because did I mention, Mick has only seven days before the time portal closes, unless he wants to be stuck forever in 1888. Mick actually has a clue about what happened to Jack the Ripper – he was never captured – and he tries to work backward and take his cue from there.
Time travel provided a nice respite from the usual contemporary or historical romances, mysteries and thrillers. As I said earlier, the book can be termed both a romance and mystery. What happens in 18888? Is Mick able to find Lettitia’s sister in the allotted time? What about Jack the Ripper? A Love for All Time is an exciting ride that will answer all these questions.
Definitely a must read, in my opinion.
