Out in the Country by Kate Hewitt is all about second chances. Middle aged and single, middle aged and widowed, or young and impressionable, we all need one more chance at getting the pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. Get engrossed in the rustic charm of Vermont as you follow the lives of three women who couldn’t be more different, but who are joined by the heart.
Lynne Marshall is a Manhattan socialite who finds herself unexpectedly widowed, grieving over her husband. She is at a loose end, spoiling to do something drastic with her life. Drastic is moving all the way to Scotland, the land of her childhood to start a hotel with her friend. She is even more flustered when her plans fall flat and she makes way to Vermont for some R&R at her husband’s home. Her loving in-laws present her with an unexpected option that just might give her a reason to enjoy life once again.
Jess is a Scotswoman who dumps her life savings in a pet project, only to find that her boyfriend ran away with all the money. She visits her friend Lynne in New York to lick her wounds and is swept away with the prospect of a new project. Jess is a skilled cook and she finds solace in a sleepy town in Vermont. And she actually is pursued by more than one man. But Jess is still hurt enough and uncertain enough to think twice before pledging her heart this time.
Molly is young and full of great intentions to do good by the world. She takes up a teaching job in a rough district and realizes she has bitten off way more than she can chew. Facing uncaring thieving students brings her ideals crashing down. Pining for grad student boyfriend does not help. And just when she needs her most, her mother is off in Vermont having the time of her life!
As a rural community comes together to help Lynne get over her grief and help her in her endeavor, she begins to prefer the fresh mountain air to the fumes of Manhattan. Living where her husband grew up allows Lynne to move on in life. But she will have to step over many a hurdle before all is well.
Kate Hewitt tells an interesting feel good story that’s great as an afternoon read. Especially if you are lounging in an Adirondack chair, gazing at mountains while breathing in the cool crisp country air, a great place for enjoying Out in the Country!
