Elly in Bloom by Colleen Oakes is the story of how Elly Jordan overcomes a bad marriage and finds happiness in life. Gardening fans will love to read about all the fancy flowers. The author adds some well honed characters like the snarky teenager, loyal friend, younger boyfriend, guy next door with a secret crush, loud mouthed competitor etc. that make this book a pleasure to read.
Elly Jordan walks away from life as she knows it and starts driving north of Georgia. She ends up in Missouri, which is portrayed as a faraway place in the book (why?). Sobbing into the arms of a stranger, she finds a loyal friend. Elly opens a flower shop because flowers remind her of her dear mother. She has a successful business going until one day she gets a high profile client and has an opportunity to do the wedding of her dreams. As Elly busts her butt preparing for the big job, she also falls for her young guitarist neighbor. Meanwhile, deli owner neighbor keeps bringing her special sandwiches but does she notice him? Oh No!
Elly in Bloom is a light read with some sentimental moments. I like the way the book ends. I think more of us girls need to realize how much inner strength we really have. And I still don’t know what all those flowers are.
