Paper Roses by Amanda Cabot is sure to enthrall romance lovers, especially if they like reading about mail order brides. A touching tale of heartbreak and love, it is the story of Sarah Dobbs who is already in love with her husband to be based on the words he wrote to her, the letters she calls ‘paper roses’.
Sarah Dobbs leaves Philadelphia to travel to San Antonio to meet her affianced, Austin Canfield. Won over by his paper roses, she is eager to start a new life. But a tragedy awaits her. Austin is killed just a few days before her arrival, and Sarah must stay on with his family. She meets Clay, Austin’s brother, who is bent on vengeance and trying hard to find Austin’s killer. Sarah tries to settle in on the Texas ranch, and love blooms between Clay and her. But she cannot forget the love Austin has felt for her that he had expressed in his letters.
The historical setting is interesting. Sarah is a strong character who prefers to work for her living instead of taking Clay’s money to go back home. She develops a close relationship with Clay’s father and helps him rebuild his health. Clay is trying hard to get some witness to tell the truth about his brother’s death. The end is unexpected and shocking, especially for a romance book.
A good story, strong plot, multiple story lines, endearing characters, historical backdrop, and an unsolved mystery – all these make Paper Roses an extraordinary romance. A must read for all book lovers!
