Do or Di by Eileen Cook promises many funny moments, but does it deliver on all of them? If you see the book cover, and were born sometime in the late 70s or early 80s, you will probably guess what the ‘Di’ stands for. The title also highlights the desperation felt by the lead character Erin as she tries to succeed in her career while also trying to snag Prince Charming along the way.
Erin Callighan is slogging hard to get her own radio show. Fate lends a hand and she gets to fill in for an injured anchor on a show – which becomes an instant hit. The show has shades of ‘Cate and Ryan’ of the CW’s Life Unexpected. Or at least that’s what it reminded me of. Erin gets another surprise in the form of Diana – Not Princess of Wales although she very well could be – a troubled teen from an outreach program she signed up for. Her friendship with her BFF is in jeopardy because she is dating a married man. As always, Erin is ignoring what’s staring her in the face, or who!
We follow Erin as she goes about reaching her career goals, without getting into much conflict. The plot of Do or Di is predictable but there are funny moments. The two main characters are likeable, and so is the third and fourth. The lesson here is that every woman is a Princess, with or without a Prince. And I’ll take that over a psycho-thriller any day!
