Secrets by Kristen Heitzmann is a romantic suspense thriller with a strong story line. There are several plots here and secrets are being kept by more than one family. There were shocking moments as the plot unfurled. But the romance thankfully balanced out the tension.
There are several books called ‘Secrets’ on Amazon so be sure to search for this one by the author. Antonia Michelli is on her deathbed after a debilitating stroke. No one can make sense out of what she is trying to urgently communicate. She sends her grandson Lance on a mission to fulfill her dying wish. Lance is shooting in the dark at best. His quest takes him to a convent in Italy and then to the Sonoma valley. Rese is a carpenter and construction worker of repute trying to deal with her own grief. She has finally decided to end her nomadic life and start a bed and breakfast in a house she is renovating in Sonoma’s wine region. Lance Michelli answers her ad for cook and both are plunged into uncharted territory.
Evvy owns the house next to Rese and is counting her last days. She tries to nudge the two young folk toward each other. Lance has his own agenda but still has room for love. Rese’s world comes crashing when an old secret is revealed. Little does she know that she is in for another betrayal.
Lance’s quest has him tracing the history of what happened several decades ago. Secrets buried deep in the Sonoma valley threaten to destroy many lives. The characters are real and fallible. I read this in almost one sitting and the suspense kept me going. Just when you think the tension gets a bit much, there is some respite in the form of other characters and their stories.
